My Favorite Resources To Keep You Movin' Forward!

If you are a writer or blogger, LISTEN UP!

Hope Writers’ 90-Day Direction Course was the first course I ever paid for online. And it was BEYOND worth it. The course gave me exactly what it promised, a plan to move forward in my writing career for the next 90 days.

This course was so good, that I remember at one point when I was watching it, I kept pausing and running outside to share new insights with my husband who was mowing the lawn. I think he had to shut the mower off on about 4 different accounts of me coming outside. 😂 I remember even literally crying at one point because it felt like THE FIRST TIME someone was relating to the quirky, crazy side of myself that wanted to write and minister to women so badly. I felt like I had found my people! Needless to say, I ended up joining the Hope Writers Community, which has really given me the help and support I have needed to move forward in this journey.

Lesson 4- The New Vision

I’m going to ask you now to form a new vision.

Take out your notebook and let’s get ready to dream a little more…

photo-1536443527011-81700919d4c0.jpeg

How does your dream look if you are keeping Jesus and your family first, and shaving the extra time you need off the bottom of your priority list?

How do you see your dream or vision fitting in with your family’s lives? Maybe these questions could help you think outside the box a little:

  • Is it possible that this dream is something you and your husband can work together on?

  • Perhaps your man has envisioned something that he could use your help on and it’s something you both feel passionate about?

  • Maybe you are called to come alongside as a helpmeet and work from home to help provide some extra income?

  • How could your husband and/or children be involved in your vision to a healthy degree?

Don’t let my questions take the wind out of your sails!

I’m challenging you to aim for some ideals when it comes to keeping your husband and children first, but this could look different for everybody!

My husband is not incredibly involved in my ministry work online, although he does read over most things I put out, because I want to have his covering and blessing! I hope that at some point in the future we can work together more on marriage material and ministry, but for now, his role in my ministry and writing looks like this:

  • He knows my heart and vision better than anyone else, covers me in prayer and gives me his blessing to move forward.

  • I talk to him about new material and projects to get his feedback. His opinions mean more to me than anyone else, and God always uses him to bring balance to my thoughts and plans.

  • With my husband’s blessing, we use a very small amount of our tithe money to help pay for my website and some additional small expenses.

  • He helps keep me on the straight and narrow (I don’t know a better way to put this but I am prone to the loopy, crooked side-roads and over-complicating things!)

  • He is an accountability partner in life-balance. He is my husband so is the first to notice if I’m not putting first things first.

  • He sees this as an arm of ministry for our family. The majority of his ministry happens through work relationships, soccer coaching and mentorship, so he sees this as a way to reach out into the world for God through a different avenue.

Now before you go thinking: “Oh I wish my man were so supportive of me, and really cared and had MY back.” Listen! You need to know that the things I listed above really do not take a whole lot of effort on my husband’s part. And he likes it that way to be honest. It is mostly about the fact that I have his blessing, support and input when I ask for it.

WE ARE NOT PERFECT, FAR FROM IT!

But I believe God has blessed our desire to be faithful to him and his word even though we fall short, get tired, and don’t do nearly enough. We have learned that we don’t need to be perfect because GOD is perfect.

And I’ve realized that I’m going to be pouring my time, energy and effort into SOMETHING (or multiple somethings) in this life. So rather than it being a bunch of little trivial things, I would like it to be something I thoroughly enjoy, and something that helps lead women to Jesus!

And I pray that God would help open the door for something you really love and desire to do, especially if you can honor him with it!

Ok, so last question for you to answer in your notebook. And on this one, I would love for you to really take your time. Make it long. Make it detailed. If it’s still messy and rough, THAT’S OKAY! Here it is:

Given your current situation- your schedule, your marriage, and your children- what would the first phase of your dream look like if you had to fit it into the current realities of your life and your budget? Be as specific as possible.

Could you make it work without adding significant stress to yourself and your family?

Take some time, dream a little more, write down your thoughts, and see if you can start to come up with something a little more concrete and doable!

Lesson 3- Putting First Things First

This might be hard.

This right here is where someone might be tempted to peel away and go follow the advice of some other coach or mogul who doesn’t insist on keeping God first.

But if you are reading this, I’m banking on the fact that you want to do this thing RIGHT.

In my own life, I adhere to this list of priorities:

  • God

  • My husband and children (and their schooling and activities)

  • My health

  • My home (and dog *roll eyes)

  • My ministry (my writing as well as coming alongside my husband to help him minister as a soccer coach and role-model)

  • A little bit of time with extended family and friends

  • Anything extra! (Hint: usually there is no time for anything extra)

My relationship with God is paramount and I make sure to take time to talk to him and read his word every morning.

After my morning quiet time, I do a very quick bit of exercise, shower, get ready, and wake my children up with enough time to have breakfast and get out the door without rushing (at least not insanely rushing:-). My oldest two attend a Christian School and my younger two are mostly home with me.

I keep our schedule very clear of clutter (we say no to pretty much everything), so we can lead balanced and leisurely lives that are centered around home. I’ve also had to prioritize keeping my phone away, because I want to be mentally and emotionally present in my home for my husband and kids.

I like being the house that my kids’ friends come over to, and I like the peaceful unhurried rhythm of not over-scheduling.

The majority of my ministry work takes place during my little boys’ 2.5 hour daily nap.

THAT IS WHEN I DO MY WRITING AND ONLINE MINISTRY.

I work for about two hours every weekday, and maybe for a few hours on a Saturday at a coffee shop every few weeks. That’s not a whole lot of time!

But, I am purposeful to get done the other things that come before this, SO THAT I CAN HAVE THIS TIME. Because the truth is I LOVE DOING THIS! It is my passion. And when you have a passion you are willing to make sacrifices for it.

Here are some things that I sacrifice in order to do this kind of work:

  • I don’t have social media (except using Pinterest as part of my blog).

  • I don’t spend idol time on my phone (of course every now and then I catch myself wasting time on my phone, but I’ve gotten quicker to put it down as soon as I realize I’m doing it!)

  • I don’t watch TV or movies during the day. Several times a week my husband and I will snuggle up on the coach at night for a movie or show, but that’s it for me.

  • My house is not at the uber-perfect, super-clean level I use to demand. (It is clean and picked up, but I’ve gotten more relaxed and realistic. I no longer spend a full day every week cleaning behind toilets and dusting every square inch like I use to).

You see, you only have time for so much in your life.

There is no way to do a good job being a wife, a mom, work full time, clean your house, keep up with all of your friends, eat healthy, meal plan, look at instagram, watch TV, be in perfect shape, and run your own successful business all at the same time.

You have to chose a few things that you want to do REALLY well, and the rest, no matter how good and worthy of your time, will have to land by the wayside.

YOU CAN ONLY DO A FEW THINGS WELL.

And here is the mistake that I see so many women in business making:

They skim their time from the top (the important things), instead of skimming it from the bottom (the less important things).

They decide against being present in their home, with their husband and children- the very things that the Bible (in Titus2) tell us are important for a woman. In fact, many women use their work or ministry as an escape from home life. And we can all understand why (because our calling as moms and wives is HARD!)

I’ve seen women try to pursue a dream while their marriage and home-life are a mess. And I want to ever so gently ask: If you, as a woman, are not pursuing God’s priorities for women, what do you really think you have to offer to other women?

Again, not that you are expected by God to be perfect in your home and marriage, but it is insane to me that most mainstream Christian ministries, books, sermons, blog-posts, are just completely leaving out, I mean like NOT EVEN TALKING ABOUT God’s most important callings on a women’s life! Being a daughter of Jesus, being a GOOD wife and a present and loving mother.

So all of that to say- There will be an abundance of material, books, voices, blog posts, etc. telling you to just GO FOR IT!! Do you! Sacrifice what needs to be sacrificed to make your dreams happen!

And there will be a lot of appealing partial-truths that temp you to bite into lies (it’s happening to all of us women!)

But be steadfast, and keep Jesus first, girlfriend.

Because there is NOTHING IN THE WORLD like God’s favor and blessing on your life, marriage, home and work. It’s EVERYTHING!

And everything else, no matter how glittery on the outside, is sheer emptiness.

Don’t be fooled.

Now please don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I know that for financial and circumstantial reasons, women often have to work outside their homes, often even full time doing something they dislike. That is just reality sometime. But as much as we are able, I believe that God calls us to have our heart anchored at home (and anchoring our home!) We are the women! If we aren’t going to be the warmth, the tenderness and the light in our home, who is?

We are the ones who make the home…home!

Again, not that you have to have a perfect marriage or be a perfect parent- far from it. It is simply about surrendering to Jesus and his priorities for you as a woman and continuing to put them in the right order.

photo-1485559131919-ba21c3a6a5ef.jpeg

And HE WILL HELP YOU! We can’t do these things on our own. We can’t make everything line up perfectly, or even feel all of things we are suppose to feel. But God’s Holy Spirit can do it through us- and that is life in the fullest!

There will be times you get your priorities in the wrong order. Repent. Ask God for help. And start again.

Bottom line- If this work you desire to do is really worthwhile and important to you, you need to remove things from THE BOTTOM of your priority list, in order to make time for it.

Now let’s work on casting a more defined vision!

Lesson 2- Dem’ Other Ladies

We all know that our dreams don’t take shape overnight.

There is a lot of work and many stages involved.

We often look at the success of someone who has been working for years and years on their dream, and either feel envious or discouraged because we can’t get there right away.

So I want to help shift your perspective a bit on some things.

I believe there is some very important groundwork that needs to take place in a woman’s life before she can move forward in a healthy way with a gift, dream or vision.

Not that we have to be perfect (praise God for that!) or have a perfect perspective on things, but just in the way that a house needs to be built on a good, strong foundation in order to be a useful, long-lasting building- the same is true of our dream.

There are some things that need to get settled in our spirit, with our own egos and in our own minds. And I believe one of the most important things we must look directly in the eye is…

That jealousy thing.

#Best Life Ever! copy.png
#Best Life Ever!.png
#Best Life Ever! (1).png

I was meeting with a mentor of mine recently to talk about some jealousy and envy issues I was having. There are a couple of women in my life who are having success in ways that I wish I was, and I am struggling not to feel envious.

It’s ugly and embarrassing. I want to be the one losing all of the weight and getting all of that attention. I want to be the one who can afford all of the new clothes, accessories and trips to the spa. It sounds so childish to say it out loud, but we all feel it. And as for me, I have a long history with jealousy. It is an issue that I continue to struggle with to different degrees and with different people. That is why it is so important for me to open my mouth and say these hard things out loud to someone.

My mentor shared that she believes jealousy is an issue as common to women as lust is to men. Wow! In other words, we all seem to struggle to varying degrees and the culture around us aids and encourages our struggle. Especially with social media. I think we can all relate to the feeling of:

“There are 1,000 other women doing what I want to be doing, and doing it WAY better than I ever could.”

Whether it’s someone’s career, someone’s body, someone’s house, or someone’s marriage- our brains seem to mix this toxic cocktail of everyone’s best features, and we are left feeling sad and discontent with our own lives.

I certainly felt this way when I joined my first official writers group. Sometimes I literally felt like: WHY BOTHER?! Everyone else is doing this WAY better than I ever could.

But then I remembered how passionate and how called I have felt to minister to women for such a long time- and how I could not see myself NOT pursuing it in some way.

And so now I want to pull you into our own little (figurative) corner of the room, look you in your eyes and tell you this:

You are an absolute masterpiece. And you are the only you. The ONLY one with the unique set of giftings that God has given to you. You’re a total original. And believe it or not, the very things that come out of you when you are not even trying hard- not pushing, not forcing or trying to prove to be unique or anything else- THOSE are the very things that make you…you.

If you don’t feel that way- if you don’t feel like you know who you are or how to find your unique self and space, here is a priceless little gem from C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity:

“Your real, new self  will not come as long as you are looking for it. It will come when you are looking for Him

Does that sound strange?

The same principal holds, you know, for more everyday matters. Even in social life, you will never make a good impression on other people until you stop thinking about what sort of impression you are making.

Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.”

In other words: Stop trying to find yourself and start trying to find CHRIST.

And in Him, you will find who you are made to be.

And if that is not enough to get your juices flowing, I have included two printables below with QUOTES THAT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE!

(If you click on the image, it will open up on it’s own page for printing)

The only way I’ve been able to bring these quotes into reality in my own life and heart, has been through quiet prayer time spent with Jesus. Which brings us to our next lesson…

Lesson 1- Space To Dream! (Get a notebook)

Hello beautiful friend! I’m so glad you’re here!!

Hi, I’m Audry!

Hi, I’m Audry!

And I’m so glad you’ve decided to take the first steps to invest in this dream of yours!

So are you Ready to dream like nobody’s watching?

I bet you have big dreams about what you want to do and who we will become, and it’s all so exciting to think about! But maybe you have NO CLUE how to take your first steps in that direction (that was me)!

Or maybe you have already begun, but have found yourself STUCK. Stuck in the same-old-same-old repetitive patterns that don’t take you anywhere closer to where you want to end up.

Either way, wherever you are on the journey to your dream…

this is your zone to let go, let your mind wander and come up with all kinds of creative ideas- until low-and-behold, that thing starts to gain some definition and traction!

That’s what this course is about.

This is NOT a business course or a step-by-step guide for setting up a blog or anything like that (although I will tell you about some of the most helpful resources that got me stated).

But this course was born out of my own on-going journey of establishing myself as a life coach, author, speaker and blogger. I am still whittling my thing into what I want it to be, but I have gained a lot of traction and have had friends tell me they think it’s “really cool” what I’m doing. I’m doing my own thing, and I can tell that so many women have that same desire to be doing their own thing.

This course is me giving YOU permission to take a bold step forward and give some definition to that thing YOU’VE been dreaming about.

Now listen up- I am a daughter-of-Christ first and foremost- and for that reason I will not advise you step out foolishly from your priorities and the God-given boundaries of responsibilities to your family. (We will talk more about this further along.)

So I want to encourage you to invite God into this dreaming process with you. Don’t leave him in the dust- he gives you the freedom and permission to dream!!

So dream like nobody’s watching! Dream like you are a child sitting with your Abba father who loves you beyond measure and looks at you with such adoring eyes.

Now, I want you to take out a notebook or some paper because you will be doing a lot of writing in this course!

It’s time dream like nobody’s watching (or reading)!!!

Write about everything you dream about doing. What would your dream life and dream career or ministry look like? Write your vision. Don’t be afraid to sound crazy or if certain parts don’t fit with others.

In this first exercise you are just GETTING IT ALL OUT THERE! For your and God’s eyes only!!

Get busy writing and dreaming!!

Do this before you move on to this next video below.

Who do you admire?

The heart behind your vision

Now it’s time to write about WHY you want to do what you want to do.

What are the problems you see that upset you and how do you want to be part of the solution?

What value do you hope to add to people’s lives?

If you are able to make money from your vision, how do you hope to give back to people?

Write about that before moving on to the next lesson.

CONGRATULATIONS!! You have just created a few pages of rough, honest, heartfelt desire! And God sees it! He sees you and your dream!
